If you remember one fact about shopping mall opening hours in Singapore, remember 10am to 10pm. It is the national retail clock. ION, VivoCity, Causeway Point, the neighbourhood plaza with a single lift — they all tend to agree. The useful article is about the edges: who opens at 9.30, who serves supper, what a public holiday actually does, and when a “mall” is open but the shop you came for is not.
The standard day
Doors at 10.00. Fashion floors live. Food courts are already thinking about lunch. Supermarkets may have been open an hour. By 9.30pm the light changes; staff start the closing face. At 10pm the mall wants you out even if a restaurant downstairs is still seating.
Tourists who arrive at 9.40am will stand in an atrium taking photographs of a waterfall or a fountain that is not yet surrounded by shops. Have breakfast first.
Public holidays and sale mornings
Major malls stay open on public holidays. This surprises visitors from countries that shut on Sundays. It does not surprise anyone who has tried to reach a till on Christmas Eve.
Chinese New Year can be the odd one: some tenants open late on the first day, some food is shut, the rest of the building is a family parade. Christmas Day is a mall day. Hari Raya and Deepavali are mall days. The Great Singapore Sale does not usually change hours; it changes queues.
Food courts, cinemas, gyms
These keep their own clocks. A food court may run 8am to 10pm. A cinema’s last show ends after the mall “closes”, and you will be shepherded along a corridor. 24-hour gyms exist inside malls that lock the rest of the floors — you will use a side door and feel like a spy. Supermarkets in heartland centres often open at 8 or 9am because that is when the neighbourhood actually shops.
See late-night and 24-hour shopping for Mustafa and the supper exceptions.
Luxury and hotel malls
The Shoppes and hotel-linked retail sometimes drift toward 11pm, especially dining. ION is still a 10pm personality. Jewel moves around flight banks. Always check the tenant, not only the building.
Heartland quirks
Smaller plazas may close earlier on quiet weeknights, or feel closed because half the tenants pulled shutters at 9. Junction 8, Lot One, Tampines Mall — the big town malls hold the 10pm line. A two-storey neighbourhood centre next to a wet market might not.
How to check without getting burned
Operator sites and the mall’s official social accounts are better than a tourism blog from 2021. Google’s hours are usually right for the building and often wrong for the shop. If the trip exists for one tenant, use that tenant’s page.
Hours are the least glamorous page on Malls SG and the one that saves the most taxis. 10 to 10. Then the exceptions. Then go home.
Tenant hours versus building hours
The building can be open while the shop is not. Japanese restaurants sometimes open only for dinner. Cinemas sleep in the morning. Banks inside malls keep bank hours, which still surprises people. Beauty services book the last slot at 8pm and walk you out through a quiet atrium. Always check the tenant. The 10pm rule is the envelope, not the contents.
Conversely, some bakeries and supermarkets are alive at 8.30am in a mall that is technically closed to fashion. You will use a side door and feel clever. You are just early.
Event days and atrium fairs
The old portal loved a roadshow. Roadshows still exist. They do not usually change opening hours. They change the time you want to arrive — earlier, or not at all. A mall that is “open till 10” on the night of a concert next door may still be a bad idea at 9.45pm.
New Year’s Eve is the rare night some dining decks pretend to be a city. The fashion floors still want to go home.
Shift workers and the 10pm problem
If you finish work at 9.30pm, Singapore retail is largely finished. Mustafa, selected supermarkets, convenience stores, and airport landside are the map — late-night. Planning a “quick Uniqlo” after a late shift is a fantasy except at the very few tenants that advertise late. Believe their door, not your hope.
How we write hours on this site
We say “about 10am to 10pm” and tell you to check. That is not laziness. It is respect for a country that will quietly move a Sunday hour for a renovation and not issue a press release. If you find a stable exception — a mall that truly opens at 9.30 every day — send it and we will write it as an exception, not a new rule.
Tourists and the 9am disappointment
Hotel breakfast plus a 9am stroll to ION is a photograph of a façade and a closed perfume counter. Have the long breakfast. Arrive at 10.15. You will still have the day. The people inside at 10.00 are staff and the slightly anxious. You can be the slightly calm.
Heartland mornings
Supermarkets and clinics break the rule in the useful direction. If you live here, you already shop at 9am in a building that is only half awake. That half is enough for milk. It is not enough for a fashion list. Do not take it personally. The shutter is not a judgement. It is a clock.
Hours checklist
- 10.00 to 22.00 is the envelope. Tenants keep their own clocks.
- Do not arrive at 09.40 for fashion. Have breakfast.
- Public holidays: usually open; CNY morning can be soft.
- Supermarkets and some bakeries wake earlier via a side door.
- Cinemas and a few restaurants outlive the shutter.
- Shift ending at 21.30: Mustafa, convenience, airport — not Uniqlo.
- Google is better on the building than on the shop.
- If a trip exists for one tenant, use that tenant’s page.
The least glamorous page on the site saves the most taxis. 10 to 10, then the edges, then home. We will write exceptions when they are stable. We will not invent a new national clock because a hotel breakfast started early and ION’s doors did not.
Frequently asked questions
- What time do shopping malls close in Singapore?
- Most close at 10pm. Restaurants, cinemas, some supermarkets and a handful of nightlife-adjacent spots run later. 24-hour retail is the exception, not a mall-wide rule.
- Are Singapore malls open on public holidays?
- Yes, almost all major malls open on public holidays, usually on the same 10am to 10pm clock. Chinese New Year morning can be quieter or staggered; check the operator.
- Do malls open earlier on weekends?
- Rarely. 10am is stubborn. Breakfast tenants and some supermarkets unlock earlier; the fashion floors do not.
